My Grand Canyon Adventure

March 11, 2005

7:20 A.M. My brother Charles and I, as we begin the 4,860 foot descent to the bottom of the Grand Canyon.

7:48 A.M. The views were absolutely spectacular. Words cannot describe the beauty of the canyon.

7:54 A.M. Although we started the day with temps in the high 30's and dangerous ice on the trail, the canyon would quickly get very hot. I decided to change into shorts and Charles thought this would make a funny photo. What was he thinking???

8:26 A.M. Yup! That's me. I look down right mean, like I'm ready to draw my revolver and shoot someone. Charles was losing patience with me and mentioned that my camera and I should be careful, he would hate to see us "slip." I wasn't quite sure what he meant.

It's only 8:48 A.M. and I'm already seeing signs like "Skeleton Point." I was beginning to wonder what my brother talked me into.

Charles led the pace the entire day.

9:55 A.M. First sight of the Colorado River. Are we done yet?

The suspension bridge that crosses the Colorado River. It leads to Bright Angel Camp.

Maybe we should take the bridge instead of wading across the river.

10:48 A.M. We crossed the Colorado River. We quickly turned around and came back up the south side of the canyon. We really just wanted to say that we had crossed the Colorado River.

11:23 A.M. We are at the halfway point, the bottom, or the low point of our journey, depending on your perspective.

1:18 P.M. I never would have guessed that there was this much green in the canyon. Even more surprising was how much the terrain and landscape changed throughout the journey.

We encountered this warning sign at 1:23 P.M. about 2/3 of the way thru the adventure. The sign read "DO NOT attempt to hike from canyon rim to the river bottom and back in one day. Each year hikers suffer serious injury or DEATH from exhaustion." Unfortunately, it wasn't until now that I realized how much of an unexperienced, out of shape hiker I was, completely unprepared for an expedition of this magnitude. Charles found it amusing but he was the only one laughing.

5:16 P.M. At this point it the sun was setting, it was getting cold again and I had no energy left. I was literally ready to quit. I had to stop about every 100 yards to rest my body. The last few miles were painful. I didn't think I could make it out of the canyon. But Charles would not let me give up. He pushed me to keep going. Little did I know how close we were to finishing.

5:21 P.M. Triumph! After 10:01 hours and 15.8 miles we have made it out of the canyon alive thanks to my brother. This was the most physically demanding thing I have ever done. I could hardly move the next morning and was sore for weeks but it was all worth it. Charles and I can't wait to do it again. Next time he's going to run the trip. Insane! As for me, I think my camera and I will camp out at the bottom and enjoy the scenery a little more.

I took this shot one evening right after sunset in my backyard. One advantage of feeding the birds is that I get quite a few wild sunflowers that spring up from the uneaten seeds.

Guest Bathroom

I finished remodeling the bathroom in the fall - I just never took the time to post the photos. I switched all the bath hardware, faucets, shower head to Oiled Bronze. I also painted the walls and changed the trim color to the khaki color. I also put in a new SUPER QUIET vent fan, new light above the shower and installed a curved shower rod which makes the tub feel much larger. The mirror and light fixture are also new. JoAnna did the decorating and picked out the colors.

I was able to capture this guy with MANUAL FOCUS! I was borrowing my friends 1.4x Canon Teleconverter which renders the auto focus on my Canon 100-400 lens inoperable. I can't believe I got the image and with such sharp detail.

While battling the elements in the wilderness today I saw many strange species of birds. Here is one example of a bird that I know nothing about. I'm going to do some research later and then update the blog with my findings.

UPDATE # 2: After finding this photo I'm now more convinced that this is a Tricolored Heron, formely known as the Louisiana Heron

UPDATE: I need your HELP! I can't figure out what bird this is. The closest I can come to is a Tricolored Heron. But that's not it if you ask me. Unless the male and female look different and I have only seen the opposite sex. Let me know what you find out. Use the comment button below. Thanks.

I'm not sure what species this is or even its common name. It is a very interesting bird. My friend Mark got eaten alive by fire ants while I captured this image. If you've never been bitten by fire ants they are extremely painful. After the pain subsides the itching and swelling begin. For some folks a single fire ant bite can still be lingering a week later. Mark bit his tongue as he stepped into an ENTIRE MOUND of fire ants. They were all over his feet. He must have gotten 5 or 6 bites. BUT he didn't let a peep out of his mouth. He didn't want me to miss the shot because he was screaming bloody murder from the agony of the multiple bites. That's what I call a brave, fearless friend!

Lucy and I visited a cemetery on River Road yesterday. These are some of the neatest places in Louisiana. This was not the fanciest grave, it was the shady peacefulness of this site that caught my attention.

Stop Flushing!

I wish all you Yankees would stop flushing your toilets so much. The Mississippi River is very high this spring. This picture shows you how high the river is. This photo has terrible color but beyond that look how much higher the ship is than the cars in the parking lot. This isn't a Photoshop trick. The levee system allows the water level of the river to be higher than the adjacent ground. The result is that ships will appear to be floating on land.

Any of you that know me would be surprised to learn that this parade is one of my favorites. You see, I'm not really a dog lover but the Krewe of Mutts is something I look forward to all year long. The kids and I have so much fun watching the parade with all the dogs in their costumes.

My Backyard

Here I am snapping some photos in my backyard. This is my primary bird viewing area. I've been feeding them and providing nesting boxes for 3 seasons now. I have lots of hummingbirds, eastern bluebirds, common grackles, cardinals, mourning doves, sparrows, wrens and mockingbirds. Occasionally I will see blue jays, red-winged blackbirds, cattle egrets, and woodpeckers. I've recently started to get some squirrels too. Today I caught one of the squirrels on top of the bat house. The first season with bat house I would count 70+ bats living in the house, but they have not been back for 2 seasons. Let me know if you have any ideas why they won't come back. They helped with controlling the mosquito population.

Jo, the kids, and I all went to New Orleans for Mardi-Gras this year. We stayed at the Royal St. Charles Hotel. This shot of the parade was about 10 feet from our hotel. Very convenient. We all had a great time. The kids must have caught about 50+ pounds of beads. At least they felt that heavy when dad was packing them back to the hotel.
